John Patterson is a consultant at Holland Beckett practising in commercial, resource management and property law with a special emphasis on coastal and harbour matters.
As solicitor for Port of Tauranga Limited and its predecessor the Bay of Plenty Harbour Board, John has been involved in property and planning aspects of much of the development of the Tauranga Harbour area such as the Sulphur Point Reclamation, Tauranga Marina, Tauranga Harbour Bridge and many of the on-shore developments associated with the Port.
John also acted for and presented extensive submissions on behalf of the Port Companies of New Zealand in respect of the repeal of the Harbours Act and incorporation of its provision in various other enactments in 1996-99. He also presented to the Resource Management Law Association Conference in 1999 a paper on the effect of the Resource Management Act on the operations of port companies.
John is an avid supporter of the Outward Bound movement and its ability to bring out the unlikely combination of individual responsibility and compassion for others. He is past New Zealand President of Outward Bound and continues to be its legal adviser.
